How to Adopt a Pet

Anyone 18 and over can adopt a pet from the Wayne County Animal Shelter.  You do not need to be a Wayne County resident.  The fee is $50.00 for female animals and $35.00 for male animals.

There is a tremendous overpopulation problem of dogs and cats in this country.  Each year millions must be destroyed because there aren't enough good homes.  Any cat or dog adopted from the Shelter must be spayed or neutered by a veterinarian.  The Shelter does not offer spaying or neutering services.  The Shelter does recommend contacting the Wayne County Humane Society or SNAP-NC for assistance with low-cost spaying and neutering.  Failure to meet this requirement is a violation of Section 2-3-30(B) of the Wayne County Animal Control Ordinance and subject to a fine and repossession of the animal.

To adopt a pet from the Shelter:

    1.  Visit the shelter during business hours (Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
    2.  Select an animal.
    3.  Complete the brief paperwork
    4.  Pay the adoption fee.

We welcome all inquiries and individuals interested in adopting a pet.
