Safe workplaces save lives, prevent serious and life threatening injuries, as well as create a more positive and productive working environment.

We are setting a new direction for safety in Wayne County. Safety is first and foremost every single day.

Accidents at work can happen to anybody at anytime and it is everybody’s duty to report unsafe work environments or conditions – as well as to watch out for  the safety of fellow employees.

Many of our accidents are the results of slips and trips – some of which could have been avoided just by being careful and paying attention.  Slips, trips, and falls are a major cause of injuries, both at work and away from work. According to OSHA, they cause 15 percent of all accidental deaths, second only to motor vehicles.

The county will be implementing training and awareness programs to create a behavior based safety culture. We will be emphasizing personal safety, as well as stressing the importance of looking out for the safety of your peers.

In addition we will all strive to reduce any “at-risk:” safety behavior.

Employees must realize that personal safety is the most important part of their job. Not only will we comply with OSHA standards, we also will have a workplace that is free of known safety hazards.

Wayne County is serious about safety and we need to make sure we communicate this to all employees.  So, I am asking each person to be a part of our Safety Team and help keep each other free of harm when doing our jobs.

Comments, questions and suggestions are welcome and can be sent to us online via the comment section on this page, or citizens can call the County Manager’s Office at 731-1435.

Sincerely,
William "Lee" Smith, III County Manager
