When individuals cannot maintain a home of their own because of a temporary or chronic physical condition or mental disability and more care is needed then can be provided by family, in home aide services, or community services, care must be considered outside of the home.Adult Care Home placement is sometimes the answer to meeting their needs.
Adult Care homes are often referred to as rest homes or assisted living homes. These homes provide residents 18 years or older with supervision and personal care as needed, assistance with planned activities, and transportation to necessary community resources. These homes are licensed by the North Carolina Department of Human Resources and include Family Care Homes and Homes for the Aged and Disabled. Family Care Homes are licensed to provide care for six or less elderly or disabled adults. Homes for the Aged and Disabled are licensed to care for seven or more elderly or disabled adults.
On-going evaluations and supervision of the licensed Adult Care Homes is the responsibility, of the Wayne County Department of Social Services. The social worker is responsible for assisting individuals and their families with placement and rendering services to the residents as needed.
To help pay for care in these facilities, persons needing financial assistance in addition to their Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, retirement benefits or other income may apply for State/County Special Assistance at the Department of Social Services.
