 Health Promotion and Wellness

The issues that Health Promotion and Wellness focus on are addressed through the state contract addendum.  Policy and environmental changes are areas addressed through the Health Promotion Program.  The Health Promotion Program is taking approaches to promote physical activity, healthy nutrition and tobacco prevention and control through policy and environmental change (examples: encouraging restaurants to provide both smoking and nonsmoking sections and developing walking trails in local neighborhoods).  Additionally, this program offers a variety of programs, which address our lifestyle and overall health. These programs include community-based programs such as nutrition education, exercise, stress management, HIV/AIDS education, smoking cessation and many others. The Health Promotion Program also provides outreach and education to the community regarding Breast and Cervical Cancer to recruit women who may qualify for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP).
Smoking Cessation
The Smoking Cessation program offered by the Wayne County Health Department utilizes the Freedom From Smoking Program by the American Lung Association. This program meets once a week over an 8-week period.  For more information, contact the Health Promotion Program at 731-1290.
HIV/AIDS Education
HIV/AIDS presentations are available by request.  Presentations are made quarterly to the Day Reporting Center clients.
 Videos and Brochures
The Health Promotion Division will gladly distribute educational brochures, in English and Spanish.  Topics include nutrition, physical activity, chronic disease prevention, smoking, HIV/AIDS, STDs, abstinence, and others.  A variety of videos are also available for loan at your request.
5 A Day Nutrition
Eating fruits and vegetables has been shown to decrease the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and stroke.  Work towards having 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.  A serving is:  1 medium-sized apple, ¾ cup of 100% fruit or vegetable juice, ½ cup fresh, frozen, or canned fruit or vegetables, 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables, ½ cup cooked dry peas of beans, or ¼ cup dried fruit.
All services are offered to Wayne County residents, community organizations, schools, church groups, civic groups, youth organizations, etc. To receive more information or to schedule a program, contact the Health Promotion Coordinator @ (919) 731-1235.
