Wise Guys is a character education program that was first implemented by the health department at the Boys and Girls Club in Goldsboro in 1999.  The program’s target population is boys ages 10 – 19. However, the program can be used with girls.  The program focuses on preparing teens for independence and helping them deal with their sexual and reproductive development, feelings, and behaviors.  Wise Guys covers many different topics (see below).  Parental permission is needed for participation in the program.  The program is available, upon request, to interested community organizations serving youth.  
The topics that are covered in Wise Guys are:
  • Abstinence
  • Communication and gender roles
  • Contraception and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
  • Teen parenting
  • Goal setting
  • Decision making
  • Personal and family values
  • Self-Esteem
  • Puberty/reproduction
  • Dating Violence
