What are your hours of operation? 
Office hours:  8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Recording hours:  8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Obtaining Marriage Licenses:  8:00 am to 4:00 pm

What is the cost of Vital Records Copies (Birth, Death, and Marriage records)?
The fee for obtaining a copy of a birth, death, or marriage certificate it $10.00 for a certified copy and $0.25 per uncertified copy.  We accept checks, cash, and money orders.  In order to obtain a certified copy in person, you must present a valid form of identification.  Forms of ID are Drivers License with photograph or State issued Identification Card.  Wayne County has ONLY births in Wayne County.

If you are not able to come in person to get a copy of a birth, death, or marriage certificate, you may download a request form and mail it to us along with payment in full and receive your document by return mail.  The request form is in PDF format and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print it.  The request form can be downloaded by clicking here.  Only persons named on the certificate or immediate family members may request a certified copy.  Requestor must sign the request and provide relationship to the person listed on the certificate.

Are there special requirements for recording deeds in Wayne County?
Yes.  A tax certification form must accompany ALL deeds presented for recording.The form is available at the Register of Deeds or Tax Office.

How can I transfer names on a Deed?
A new deed will need to be prepared.  You need to contact your attorney for this service.  After you have signed the deed, had your signature notarized and have the tax certification form signed by personnel at the Tax Office, then the deed is presented for recording in this office.  The fee for filing a deed is $14.00 for the first page and $3.00 for each page thereafter.  If there was money transferred, the excise tax amount is $2.00 per $1,000 in sales price.

How do I obtain a copy of my deed?
You may visit our website or come into the office and give us your name and approximate year of obtaining the property, or you can mail in a request.  Obtaining a copy is $.25 per copy.

Can a Register of Deeds office tell me who owns a particular piece of property by an address?
No.  Our records are by name only.  To find out this information, you might try the Wayne County Tax Office.

Do I need an appointment to take my Notary oath?  What documents must I present to take my oath?
No appointment is necessary to take your oath.  All staff members are able to assist you with taking your oath.  It would be helpful to bring your transmittal letter you received from the Secretary of State.  Oaths are given during office hours.
