Community Enforcement

Sheriff Winders established the Enforcement Division in 2002. The primary duties of this division are to provide a Law Enforcement presence in the Dudley area. This is accomplished by providing additional patrols and responding to calls for service. Their other duties include: Providing assistance to the Warrent Squad, Drug Squad and Investigations.  Another facet of their duty is to enforce County ordinances, which includes, but not limited to the Wayne County Solid Waste Ordinances, and Wayne County Junk Car Ordinance.

To report Solid Waste Ordinance violations please call (919) 705-6542

C.O.P.E

"Together We Can"

In 2000 Sheriff Carey A. Winders developed the Community Oriented Prevention Education Program (C.O.P.E.) Since its creation, over 7500 students have graduated from this program. The C.O.P.E. program was designed as a dynamic process, it can and has changed to meet the needs of the students and community as needed. This program is taught in 12 of the schools in Wayne County. Our C.O.P.E. Instructors are Captain Willie Brinson, and Deputy Brandy Jones. Sheriff Winders realizes the many temptations and bad influences that can cause our children to make wrong decisions in life. This program is designed to teach our children respect, and warns them about the dangers of drugs, violence, peer pressure, and gang activity. Our motto is "Together We Can". These Deputies also provide our citizens with other Community Services, which is designed to increase awareness and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods. This is accomplished by giving talks to local groups, such as Churches, CivicGroups, and other Organizations. This Division is also responsible for establishing Community Crime Watches and Home Crime Prevention Surveys. During Home Crime Prevention Surveys, the Deputy will give the resident suggestions on how to improve security and protection for their home. To have your home surveyed, please call (919) 705-6542.

SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER PROGRAM

Sheriff Winders established the first full-time School Resource Officer Program in Wayne County. School Resouce Officers carry additional certification over and above basic law enforcement training. Currently there are 7 full-time Deputy Sheriff's who serve as School Resource Officers. This program, which was developed by the Governor and the state, pays for over half of the School Resources Officers Salary. Their duty is to provide a Law Enforcement presence for the school. The School Resource Officer is also available to assist the school staff with security issues during school and also during after school activities. They also serve as role models. As a role model they serve as a vital link between law enforcement and young adults. They often give advice to students in order for them to live productive lives. The Deputies also serve as an avenue to stimulate an interest in the Law Enforcement Field. Sheriff Winders believes this is probably one of the best ways to recruit young people seeking a Law Enfocement career. During the summer months when schools are out these Deputies assume other roles within the Sheriff's office This provides additional Deputies for patrol, investigations and other divisions.
