The Wayne County Health Education Division has some great Wellness Tips that will make your day!
It's true, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. To start your day full of energy and enthusiasm you need to refuel. Your body has been without food for 10-12 hours!
Despite popular belief, snacking is not bad. Eating a snack can boost your energy level between meals and take the edge off your appetite so you don't get too hungry and overeat later. For kids with small appetites snacks can contribute important nutrients to the diet.
Make low fat food choices. Popular fast food meals (burgers and fries) may contain up to 50% of total calories from fat. Nutritionists recommend that no more than 30% total daily calories come from fat. Making smart food changes may change the way you look and feel and contribute to a positive self-image.
Try lower fat cooking methods like baking, broiling, roasting or steaming foods.
A tip for smart shoppers... when shopping for fruits and vegetables choose dark green and orange varieties for entire nutrients. For example spinach and carrots have more nutrients than iceberg lettuce and celery.
A product labeled as "cholesterol free" is not necessarily low in fat. Read the label. Low fat foods should have no more than 3 grams of fat per serving.
Walking is the most inexpensive form of exercise. A brisk walk can help you burn fat, lose weight, increase your cardiovascular endurance, and even reduce stress. Walking can be done alone or with friends. Studies have shown that exercise need not be intense to be beneficial.
Warm up before stretching.. It's a good idea to warm up (for example: 10 minutes on a stationary bike) before working out. The warm up gets your blood flowing and reduces the chance of straining a muscle.
