Patrol & K-9 Division


Captain Brian Dawson oversees the daily operation of all patrol functions for the Sheriff's Office. Deputy sheriffs assigned to the Patrol Division are divided up among four Patrol Squads, two Warrant Squad shifts, two ACE Team Shifts, DWI Task Force and the Swat Team.  Currently there are 53 Deputies assigned to the Patrol Division. 
Each Patrol Shift consists of:
  • 1 Lieutenant
  • 1 Sergeant
  • 1 Corporal
  • 5 Deputy Sheriffs
  • K-9
These K-9's are utilized primarily for narcotics, tracking, evidence retrieval, high risk building searches and Search and Rescue, and also for cadaver retrieval on land and in water.


Deputies assigned to the Patrol Division answer emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance that are received from either the Sheriff's Office or Wayne County Central Communications.

They respond to a wide variety complaints that can range from simply checking the welfare of a loved one, to responding to an active armed robbery. The Sheriff's Office is the primary emergency backup agency for all of the other law enforcement agencies in the county.

Reporting Zones

The Sheriff's Office has divided the county into 6 reporting zones. Deputies patrol an area that is approximately 555 square miles with a service population of over 130,000 residents.
