Wayne County, NC – Yesterday, the Wayne County Board of Commissioners accepted the lowest bid for a competition gym at Southern Wayne High School as recommended by the Wayne County Board of Education. This $6 million facility will replace the aging gym currently at the school and is expected to be completed in 12 months.
Board of Commissioner Chairman A. Joe Gurley, III said, “We appreciate the superintendent coming to answer our questions this morning and for showing us the floor plans and elevations of the new facility. We look forward to the completion of this project for Southern Wayne.”
County Manager Craig Honeycutt added, “We would like to thank Dr. Dunsmore for presenting today and his willingness to keep the Board of Commissioners updated on a multitude of projects. We look forward to moving many of the projects forward.”
“We are very appreciative of the Board of Commissioners' support of this project," states Dr. Michael Dunsmore, superintendent. "Constructing a competition gym, similar to what can be found on other high school campuses, has been long needed for this end of the county. We look forward to being able to provide the Southern Wayne High School community a state of the art facility that offers more locker room space to students and athletes, while at the same time ensuring visitors have access to modern ADA compliant restrooms and bleachers."
