Blood Lead Toxicity Prevention Program
The goal of the Blood Lead Program is to provide preventive lead toxicity information to caregivers and the general public to prevent and control lead toxicity in children.

Innovative Approaches

Provides care for families in the community, focusing on improving care for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs.

Orthopedic Clinic
Provides services to children birth to 21 years of age with suspected or diagnosed problems of the bones, muscles or joints. Physicians from Duke University Pediatric Orthopedic clinic assist with this program

Child Service Coordination
Provides in home services to families with children from birth through 5 years of age. Services include developmental screening, parental education and guidance, family counseling, and assistance with housing, food provisions, child care, medical care, and immunizations.

Communicable Disease Control
Provides general communicable disease control, access to Child Care/Nurse Consultants and information on the Tuberculosis Outreach.

Health Services Team (HST)

The Health Services Team works with child care providers and parents that have children ages 0-5 years of age. The team focuses on preventive health education, consultation, health assessments, health screenings (hearing, vision, dental, and development) and provides referral and follow up for appropriate services. This is a Smart Start funded program.

Health Check
Serves Wayne County to increase awareness about Health Check and the Importance of routine preventive health care for children.

Immunization Clinic
Provides required immunizations, vaccines and TB screening for those entering school.


The Pharmacy Department provides supportive pharmaceutical services to all programs offered by the Wayne County Health Department.

Sickle Cell Screening
As part of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Eastern North Carolina Chapter, Wayne County Health Department offers testing to all citizens of Wayne County. The Health Department also offers family counseling on a monthly basis to those with Sickle Cell trait.

WIC Program (Women's/Infants/Children)
Provides supplemental food and nutrition education for qualified women with infants and children.
