An IUD is a small, flexible plastic shaped like a ‘T’ that gets inserted inside the female uterus.

There are two types of IUDs: Copper (Brand: Paragard) and Hormonal (Brands: Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta and Skyla). Sperm doesn’t like copper which makes the copper IUD very effective in preventing pregnancy. The copper IUD doesn’t contain any hormones and can last for up to 12 years. The hormonal IUDs, depending on the brand, can last between 3 to 7 years.

It is important to use barrier contraceptives like condoms while using this birth control method as it doesn’t protect against STDs nor guarantees pregnancy prevention!
